Closest Packing Sculpture

photo 1Using the concept of closest packing of objects in space, I am studying the connections of packing structures with the irrational number phi, 1.61380… This number appears in a huge range of problems connected to structure, growth and symmetry, spanning phyllotaxis (plant growth) Platonic solids, spherical geometry and Penrose tiling. The later is an a periodic tiling system that expresses high levels of order and five fold symmetry that allows for packing of atomic lattices in crystal formations that express five fold symmetry, something that was thought to be impossible.
